Fatigued to fabulous in simple steps

Just over two years ago, I was sitting on the side of my bed, fatigued and overwhelmed, my head in hands, wondering how I was going to get through the rest of the day.

I was exhausted, had aches and pains and felt way older than I actually was and it was making me feel miserable. The thought of where I might end up in another 10 years time was a little frightening. And I felt alone and a failure: that I was the only mother who felt this way, that I was hopeless because I wasn’t managing like everyone else.

Well, turns out I wasn’t the only one. Turns out that there are plenty of mothers, and fathers, in our society who are really struggling with the load, and feeling not just fatigued but unhappy and overwhelmed at where to start to make improvements.

Turns out that there are thousands of us and we’re not stupid or hopeless. We’re just too tired, too busy and too damn confused by all the differing information to know where to start, or to keep going when we do make a start.

We’re highly educated – we get it. We know we need to make changes. But it feels like we’ve got to climb a mountain to get there and when you’re fatigued, a mountain climb just ain’t going to happen.

I started this space and these Sense of Self programs to help mums specifically, because of this – because some of us need help that is just for us.

There is a tonne of fabulous resources out there with all the information you could possibly need (and lots you don’t) to be healthy and happy. There is so much information that it can be overwhelming and confusing.

When I went looking though, mostly the books, sites, and programs that were targeted at mums were all about creating healthy kids and families. Which is fantastic!

But it wasn’t what I needed when I needed it.

When I crashed, when I hit that bottom plateau of exhaustion, despair and overwhelm, bordering on depression, I needed help. I needed to make changes. I needed it, not my kids, husband or friends. I was looking after them – and even at my worst I was still doing a fantastic job – but nobody was looking after me. And that’s what I needed – someone to look after me, and I finally realised that it had to be me who did it.

That was two years ago now. I took the long way. I didn’t have a coach. I didn’t do a program. I used my research, went through trial and error, and studied. I continue to study and research, and experiment with what works for me.

Because of my decision to look after me, my kids and hubby and extended family are better off anyway. I’m happier. I have more joy to share with them.

There’s no better feeling than feeling great – within yourself and about yourself. And it is possible to overhaul your life in simple, small steps and faster than you probably think. We can make health and happiness as easy or as complicated as we like.

In the end though it comes down to these things:

  • Nourish yourself with real food, self-acceptance and gratitude;
  • Balance your time to include space for you;
  • Inspire yourself and those around you by living your life on purpose and in a way that is authentic for you.
