Burnout is a term we hear often among women who have simply stretched themselves to the limit, and then beyond.
It’s a term that can mean different things to different people, but essentially it describes a feeling of complete exhaustion.
Jules Galloway is a naturopath and functional medicine practitioner who specialises in helping women with burnout and adrenal fatigue so I invited her to have a conversation about burnout to help us understand exactly what it is, how it happens and what we can do about it.
In the show Jules describes burnout as a physical, mental, and emotional fatigue that happens after a woman has pushed herself so far the mind and body start to have issues, and “they end up in a hole they struggle to dig themselves out of”.
She also describes it as a “creeper” – a condition that creeps up on you bit by bit, and you’ll think you’re handling it but the condition is building in the background.
Jules says most women leave it too late – they persist in putting up with symptoms they think are normal, and it’s not until they reach a point where the problem is complicated that they seek professional help.
In the show, Jules lists a range of symptoms and early signs to look out for, as well as what to test for and ideas to help prevent the burnout crash.
She also touches on adrenal and thyroid health, and the interconnectedness of our intricate endocrine system – all information we need to understand what we’re feeling in our mind and body, and potentially why.
